The Skill for Life Course

Becoming an Advanced Driver is within the reach of most people - with the
right preparation. The Advanced
Driving Test is taken only when you are ready. It is a thorough test of your
driving skills which cover a wide variety of roads. You will be expected to show
that you can concentrate and handle your vehicle capably, sympathetically, and
systematically and exhibit courteous, responsible driving behaviour.
The test itself lasts
for approximately 90 minutes and is conducted by a serving or retired police
officer who holds a Police Advanced Driving Certificate, widely regarded as the
highest level of driving excellence obtainable in the UK.
It covers about 30–40 miles
(50–65 km) and includes town/city, rural areas, motorways and/or dual
carriageways to test the candidate in a wide range of conditions each with
different hazards. The test is significantly more difficult that the standard
DSA driving test, but is within the reach of most motorists with the right
guidance.
We offer a structured 8 week course prior to taking the Advanced Test.
Each Sunday morning, you will drive your vehicle for between 1 and 1½ hours
with an experienced member (Observer) by your side. During the run, the Observer
will comment on your driving and offer constructive suggestions for improvement.
At the end of the run you will be given a comprehensive debrief and one or two
key points that require improvement will be highlighted for you to practice
before the following Sunday.
