Welcome
Hello and welcome to the St Helens Group of Advanced Motorists web site.
In the UK every 90 seconds of every day and night, someone is injured in
a traffic accident or put another way there are nearly 1,000 road accidents per
day and 3,000 deaths per year?
In 1956 the Institute of Advanced Motorists was formed to implement a
driving test at an advanced standard aimed at experienced drivers.
This at a time when the MOT
test, seat belt laws and national speed limits did not exist
in the UK.
The standard for the Advanced Driving Test is based on the police system
of car control, Known as “The System”. This was developed by the
Metropolitan Police Driving School at Hendon and is the standard method
underlying all Emergency Services training today
Since its launch over 200 local UK groups have been successfully formed
to deliver it. The advanced driving
standard is delivered through a package marketed by the IAM as the "Skill
for Life".
The IAM has a local,
group-based structure. Groups recruit new or "associate members", and
provide training and advice on using the system to help the associate pass the
IAM's advanced test and become a full member.

More than 350,000 drivers have now passed the Advanced Driving Test. Very
importantly research by Brunel University has concluded that advanced drivers
who had been through the IAM system of car control were nearly 70% better in all
aspects of their driving – from steering to judging distances and speed
(source Wikipedia). As a consequence Advanced Drivers are significantly less
likely to be involved in a collision
As IAM members they could benefit from lower insurance and motoring
costs, plus many other advantages of membership.
